The number of unemployed fell sharply (-4.6%) in June, or 204,700 registered in category A less, a drop due to the return of job seekers to reduced activity (categories B and C) with the continuation deconfinement, according to employment center figures published on Monday.

However, this number remains at the very high level of 4.221 million after the exceptional increases due to containment. Overall, the workforce in categories A, B and C continued to increase, 0.5%, to 6.157 million, its highest level ever.

No more passages in reduced activity

The number of job seekers who exercised a reduced activity during the month (categories B and C) continues to increase (+236,200). As in May, the decrease in the number of job seekers in category A is mainly explained by their transition to reduced activity. In total, the workforce in categories A, B and C increased again in June, but at a slower pace than in the previous two months (+31,500, after +61,000 in May and +209,300 in April).

This increase in the number of people in categories A, B, C comes against a backdrop of a rebound in entries to Pôle emploi (+102,000 after 66,000 in May) and a further increase in exits (+132,400 after +82,800 in May), linked to a sharp increase in inactivity returns. The exits concern all the reasons, in particular the declared resumptions of employment and the entries in internship or in training, which find levels similar or even higher than those of February.

Category A unemployed up 24.5% in the second quarter

On average in the second quarter of 2020, in mainland France, the number of people registered with Pôle emploi and required to look for a job (categories A, B, C) stood at 5.8 million. Among them, 4.15 million people are unemployed (category A) and 1.67 million have a reduced activity (categories B, C).

In mainland France, the number of job seekers in category A increased by 24.5% (+815,500) this quarter and by 22.7% over one year. The number of people exercising a short reduced activity (category B) fell by 15.3% compared to the previous quarter. Over the same period, that of people in long reduced activity (category C) decreased by 24.7%. In total, the number of job seekers in categories A, B, C increased by 6.7% over this quarter (+364,700) and by 4.2% over one year.

In the second quarter, 618,300 people registered with Pôle Emploi were not required to look for a job. They are either not immediately available and unemployed (category D, for example: training, job security contract, illness), or provided with a job (category E, for example: business creation, subsidized contract). Over this quarter, the number of registrants in category D fell by 1.5% and that of those registered in category E by 6.4%.

In France (including the overseas departments-regions, excluding Mayotte), the number of job seekers amounted to 4.4 million for category A. It increased by 23.2% over the quarter ( + 21.2% over one year). For categories A, B, C, this number is 6,115 million. That is an increase of 6.5% over this quarter and 3.9% over one year.
