Vodafone Spain resists the economic challenge of the coronavirus and even improves commercially in the first quarter of its financial year, that is, from April 1 to June 30. Service revenues have decreased by 6.9% to 920 million euros, "due to a drop in revenues from roaming / tourists, the launch of initiatives and offers to support customers and society during the pandemic, the reduction of income from the Horeca sector [hotels, restaurants and cafes] and the temporary deactivations of companies due to the decrease in activity. "

However, the company is in the process of some recovery. As an example, in the same quarter of 2019, revenue fell more sharply, 9.3%, then due to its repositioning towards the public and its resignation from paying for soccer television rights, with the consequent loss of customers. All this in a "competitive framework dominated by aggressive promotions, the strategic decision to leave football due to its lack of profitability and the push for low cost proposals".

The coronavirus environment is far from good, but appears to have been less damaging to the UK-based operator than those market factors. In this quarter of pandemic, confinement and beginning of crisis, Vodafone Spain has added 83,000 mobile contract clients, up to 11.4 million; 30,000 of fixed broadband, up to 3.2 million; and also from its television platform, 57,000 up to 1.5 million customers, "supported by the proposal that includes the largest catalog of cinema and series in the Spanish market" according to the company.

In these quarterly accounts, Vodafone Spain does not provide profit or loss data, only income from services, the core of a telephone operator's billing. The company has been the first to enable mobile rates in Spain with unlimited data, "a latent demand" for the user: 15 months after the launch in Spain, there are already 2.7 million lines with this connection without restrictions.

Furthermore, as they recall in a statement from the company, "Vodafone is the only operator with a commercial 5G network deployed and active in Spain", a network that was launched in June 2019 in 15 cities, with download speeds of up to 1Gbps and minimum latencies or delays.
