Home exchange, carpooling, rental of tools between individuals, these forms of collaborative consumption can have an impact on insurance. - IStock / City Presse

Some share their belongings, their household appliances, their car or even their accommodation, while others bought these small services between individuals to make ends meet and make profit from unused objects.

But if collaborative practices have multiple advantages, no one is immune to an accident. However, your insurance will not work every time.

Optional insurance

Before registering on a rental and sharing platform between individuals, start by carefully reading the "FAQ" or "Frequently Asked Questions" section to find out the applicable contract, deposit, insurance and deductible terms. Many collaborative sites do not offer any cover to their members, leaving it to everyone to arrange with their insurer in the event of a problem. And that is the danger, because the rental of your personal effects is very often one of the causes of exclusion from your multi-risk home contract. If you rent your drill to an individual and the latter breaks it, there is therefore a good chance that none of your respective insurers will accept to compensate you.

Known platforms, however, provide certain guarantees to renters through a standard contract, insurance, or even the posting of a deposit for valuables. There are conditions applied. On Zilok.com, for example, a 10% deductible is applied in the event of breakage, against 20% for a theft, knowing that the maximum reimbursement is set at 2,000 euros. Placedelaloc.com imposes a deductible of 151 euros, for a guarantee set at 1,510 euros maximum.

A safe house

The seasonal rental of a furnished accommodation does not oblige to take insurance, neither on the side of the owner, nor that of the tenant. In practice, however, both are highly recommended. Home swapping also requires taking precautions. Your multi-risk housing contract covers in principle damage due to a fire or water damage that has occurred in your home, including if a third party lives there free of charge in your absence, just as these guarantees apply when you live outside your home usual. However, contact your insurer to check under what conditions and limits your coverage works.

Also remember to check that the contract does include a resort liability guarantee, which will take care of any damage you may cause to the other owner. Of course, the person with whom you exchange your accommodation must provide the same protections.

Driver protection

In addition, to reduce the cost price of their vehicle, more and more motorists are being seduced by carpooling. A risk-free practice in terms of legal protection, as long as the green insurance badge is securely attached to the windshield. In the event of an accident, the driver's insurance covers it, as do its passengers, even if they have paid for their trip. Beware, however, of commuting to work which is not included in all contracts.

Because it involves renting your vehicle to a third party, the practice of carsharing, on the other hand, requires taking out specific insurance. Dedicated platforms such as Ouicar.fr and Getaround.com include it in their services, allowing the owner not to suffer a penalty if the tenant has an accident with his vehicle. However, the latter will have to pay the often high franchise fees (800 euros on average).

Good reflexes

If collaborative consumption is based on trust and respect for everyone, a good contract is never superfluous. Here are some reflexes to be serene:

  • Go through a known and specialized platform: in addition to ease of management, it will offer guarantees of security and insurance to both parties.
  • Check the conditions of cover: it is important to know the amount of guarantee and deductible, if only to choose between several internet platforms.
  • Notify your insurer: from one company to another, the rules are not the same vis-à-vis collaborative forms of consumption. It is therefore useless to take risks when an email or a phone call is enough.
