To safely navigate the horizon, check your insurance coverage! - IStock / City Presse

Fancy a trip to the sea or a trip on the canals this summer? With or without a license, rental offers allow you to go on a mop for small or large nautical excursions.

But be careful, because the slightest scratch can quickly cost the eyes of the head on board a boat.

A life jacket at a high price

While it is mandatory to take out insurance to drive a car, this is not the case for a pleasure craft. But in practice, this protection is essential. As an owner of a nautical machine, you have several options.

First imperative: cover your civil liability, in order to take care of any damage you may cause to a third party. Do you only have a small canoe or a boat? Your multi-risk housing contract may suffice. This protection is however limited by the size and power of the boat. Note that being a member of a club affiliated to a sports federation automatically covers you.

Watch out for damage

That being said, you don't need anyone to suffer damage and damage your boat yourself. It is therefore also better to take out a “ship's body guarantee”, covering the costs of repairing or losing the boat in the event of an accident at sea, as well as a theft guarantee, without forgetting that dedicated to breakdown assistance and 'assistance. Therefore, it is necessary to turn to a multi-risk pleasure contract, which also includes civil liability. Be careful to check the geographic area covered, not to underestimate the guaranteed value (it limits the reimbursement of the insurer) and to get information beforehand from your club to choose a successful company.

On the tariff side, count 200 euros per year to insure all risks for a small sailboat or a motor boat, and up to 1,500 or 2,000 euros annually for an imposing ship.

Protect yourself at the right time

The easiest way to navigate from time to time is to rent a boat from time to time from a professional or go through a boat rental platform between individuals. In order to make their boat profitable, more and more owners are indeed agreeing to share it with complete strangers, for a financial compensation. In either case, a look at the insurance cover included is essential.

In general, professional rental companies cover accidental damage suffered by the boat or caused to third parties, subject to a more or less substantial deposit. As with cars, franchise buyout options can be added. Be careful, however, with your personal effects, which are often excluded from protection.

All these checks are even more important in the case of a rental between individuals, since many insurers refuse to cover these tariffed uses. This is why linking sites such as Samboat, Nauticboat or Clickandboat have forged partnerships with insurance companies, in order to protect all of their users (owners and tenants), in return for a fee fixed in depending on the number of rental days.
