If it is quite possible to carry out your move alone, you still have to choose the right utility for transport. - IStock / City Presse

If many professional moving companies offer their service, they cannot meet all of the requests. In 2019 alone, more than 8 million French people planned to change their accommodation, according to a CSA Research study carried out for Cofidis France. Not to mention that calling on specialists can be expensive.

To limit the bill, many households therefore manage on their own. How to do it ?

The right timing

First of all, you must analyze your calendar to best organize your rental and travel. Think that, like you, many families or singles will decide to make this change of address during the weekend or during the holidays. If you plan all this well in advance, you will not fall in need of a van at a rental company.

According to the same CSA Research poll, the months of May and June are literally taken by storm. 22% of those questioned in 2019 planned to move during these two months.

A matter of volume

You must best assess the storage volume necessary for your move. To make your task easier, there are tips. Stack all your boxes per cubic meter or its multiple, for example. After adding the volumes required for all your furniture, you can choose your utility.

Also remember that if you increase the number of trips, in the event of a short distance between the two accommodation units, you will necessarily need less volume in the van, which will allow you to opt for a less imposing and therefore less expensive vehicle.

Choose your provider

Start by comparing the rates with different rental companies. Some offer, for example, half-day rental for short trips, which again reduces the bill provided you estimate your timing as accurately as possible. Rental agencies can also offer financially advantageous packages. In addition to the truck, they provide wheeled carts, straps, hand trucks and other cardboard protectors.

It will take on average between 40 and 80 euros to rent a utility for the day, and more than a hundred euros if you rent it for a weekend.

Who will drive?

The classic driving license B is enough to hire any type of utility, from the simple van to the 20 m3 vehicle with tailgate and loading platform.
However, rental agencies generally require a minimum holding period to allow you to drive. At Hertz, you have to drive for a year, for example, while Rental Car wants drivers who have held their license for more than three years. Conversely, at France Cars, one year of driving is enough, but a supplement applies to young drivers who are under 23 years of age. Same principle at Sixt, which imposes two years of license, even an age limit of 25 for the largest commercial vehicles, and provides for additional costs below this threshold.
