The Sino-Singapore Jingwei client reported on July 9 (Fu Yumei) that the car companies' recalls in the first half of the year will not increase but will increase, and involve multiple popular models.

According to the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration, as of June 30, 2020, China had issued 67 auto recall announcements, with a total of 3,202,352 vehicles recalled, a year-on-year increase of 16.37%. The reporter of China-Singapore Jingwei found out that the Mercedes-Benz brand recalled 11 times and nearly 800,000 vehicles, temporarily ranking first.

German and Japanese popular Mercedes-Benz become "recall king"

The data shows that the number of German brands in the first half of this year is higher than other brands in terms of the number of recalls and the total number. The cumulative recall is 1.383 million vehicles, accounting for 43.1% of the total recall in the first half of this year.

Japanese cars followed, with a total recall of 1.371 million vehicles in the first half of this year, accounting for 42.7%. Among them, Honda recalled more than 770,000 vehicles on May 29, which is also the largest single recall in China this year.

However, overall, Mercedes-Benz is still the "recall king" in the first half of the year. According to statistics from Sino-Singapore Jingwei reporters, as of June 30, 2020, Mercedes-Benz has issued a total of 11 announcements, with a total of 788,269 vehicles recalled, covering almost all domestic and imported popular models.

At the end of June, Mercedes-Benz launched the largest recall so far this year, involving nearly 670,000 defective cars. It is worth noting that this recall activity was carried out under the situation that the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration initiated a defect investigation, and the specific recall implementation phase will begin on December 18.

In addition to Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen and other German cars are also the main recalls this year. According to statistics from the China-Singapore Jingwei reporter, as of June 30, the Volkswagen brand has also conducted 9 batches of recalls, with a total of 471,438 vehicles.

Power battery is a new problem

It is worth noting that in the two large-scale recalls of Honda and Mercedes-Benz, the reasons for the recall are related to the fuel pump problem, involving more than 1.4 million defective vehicles.

The Honda recall announcement shows that some of the vehicles within the scope of this recall, due to imperfect resin molding conditions during the manufacture of the fuel pump impeller, have resulted in insufficient impeller resin density. Impeller problems may cause the fuel pump to work poorly, and in extreme conditions the engine may stall while the vehicle is running.

The Mercedes-Benz recall announcement shows that the junction of the high-pressure fuel pump and low-pressure fuel pipe of some vehicle engines within the scope of this recall. After being affected by a long-term heat load, the tightness will be reduced. When the vehicle starts cold under low temperature conditions, oil leakage may occur.

According to the Notice of the General Administration of Market Regulation on the National Automobile and Consumer Goods Recalls in 2019, in the 2019 auto recall, airbags/seat belts and engines are still the main defect-generating components. There were 46 recalls due to airbag/seat belt-related defects, involving 2,151,800 vehicles; 47 recalls due to engine-related defects, involving 198,200 vehicles.

Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Car Market Information Association, said that there are no new trending events in the traditional car recall in 2020. In contrast, the recall of new energy batteries has increased rapidly, and the problem of power batteries is under greater pressure.

With the high temperature in summer, spontaneous combustion has become a major hidden danger of new energy vehicles. On June 15, Chongqing Lifan Passenger Vehicle Co., Ltd. announced the recall of 3651 Lifan 650EV300 pure electric vehicles because of the possibility of thermal runaway and fire risk of the power battery pack.

The bus sector was not spared. On June 24, FAW Bus (Dalian) Co., Ltd. recalled 3,196 pure electric van transport vehicles, because the power battery was thermally out of control due to poor battery cell consistency, and there was a potential for spontaneous combustion. On the same day, Zhuhai Guangtong Automobile Co., Ltd. also recalled 400 pure electric city buses due to problems such as internal battery short-circuit heating risk and defects in heat dissipation system design.

Cui Dongshu pointed out that the number of battery recalls of autonomous car companies is relatively large, the problem is relatively serious, and the strength of some companies is weak, and the problem is difficult to solve effectively.

How to treat the car recall?

Regarding car recalls, consumers are generally concerned about the quality of the car itself and wonder whether they can continue to buy this model.

In this regard, Wang Yan, deputy director of the Defective Product Management Center of the State Administration for Market Supervision and Administration, said that China is already the world's largest automobile market, and it will inevitably bring about automobile quality and safety problems. He believes that the recall system is not only to reduce the personal injury of defective products to consumers, but also to force companies to improve product quality and make products safer.

"It is worth noting that defective products are not equal to inferior products, which is often easy to be misunderstood. Consumers should rationally view the recall incident." Wang Yan said.

Cui Dongshu also pointed out that the recall of automotive products is a process in which manufacturers eliminate their product defects in accordance with statutory requirements and procedures. Increasingly frequent recalls in recent years have actually become a mature mechanism for solving defects in automotive products. "For example, the number of independent brand recalls has gradually increased in the past two years, in fact, it has further strengthened its quality control." Cui Dongshu said.
