  • This Thursday, Airbus management announced a layoff plan. 5,000 jobs are concerned in France including a little 1,000 in Loire-Atlantique.
  • Some elected officials from 44 have expressed their concern and are calling to account the management of Airbus, but also Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy and Finance.

The shock wave is enormous in Loire-Atlantique. Airbus plans to lay off 15,000 positions worldwide, including 5,000 in France. This Thursday, the aircraft manufacturer's management unveiled its plan: 1,071 redundancies are planned in Loire-Atlantique including 484 positions in Bouguenais, 386 in Saint-Nazaire and 201 in Stelia Saint-Nazaire.

"The announcement by the management of Airbus of the reduction of 5,000 jobs in France is a blow for the Pays-de-la-Loire, which is the second pool of jobs in the group [6,500 employees]", confesses Christelle Morance, President of the Pays-de-la-Loire Regional Council. Philippe Grosvalet, Chairman of the Loire-Atlantique Department, finds it hard: “Airbus' decision to cut more than a thousand jobs in Loire-Atlantique is a terrible shock. Our department is the second pole of the aircraft manufacturer in France and aeronautics represents more than 27,000 jobs in the Pays-de-la-Loire. "

The CCI (Nantes Saint-Nazaire Chamber of Commerce and Industry) speaks of "a blow to the territory, first of all for the employees and their families directly impacted".

What are the 15 billion dollars used for, wonder the elected officials?

Christelle Morance does not want to stop there: “No one disputes the gravity of the crisis which strikes the air sector, but a social plan of this magnitude is not acceptable whereas Airbus profits from the plan of support of the State to aeronautics. A plan of 15 billion euros whose very purpose is to preserve the maximum of jobs and skills! "She therefore asked Bruno Le Maire [Minister of the Economy and Finance]" to initiate negotiations with the leaders of Airbus as soon as possible, in order to safeguard the maximum of jobs and protect industrial know-how. "

Philippe Grosvalet, too, does not want to let go: “We cannot resign ourselves to this gloomy prospect that hangs over our territory. We must react, as we did in 2007 when Airbus already announced the abolition of 5,000 jobs. At the time, we were able to mobilize collectively to create the conditions to get out of this air hole. "

Bouguenais and Saint-Nazaire hard hit

Sandra Impériale, future mayor of Bouguenais, expressed "her dismay" in a press release after "the announcement of a potential loss of 484 jobs on the Airbus site which has 2,700 employees in the town of Bouguenais".She also wonders why the 15 billion unlocked to help the aeronautics industry does not "make up for this social breakdownannounced ”. And finally, she questions "the relevance of the contract signed by Airbus with UTC [American company] for the manufacture of nacelles when the Bouguenais site was able to produce them".

David Samzun, mayor of Saint-Nazaire, also reacted this Thursday at the end of the day. Above all, he thinks of "the people and therefore the families who will be affected".
