Last month's sales of major supermarkets increased 1.3% from the same month last year, increasing for the first time in two months. Last month, many people spent their time at home due to the spread of the new coronavirus, and food sales were strong.

According to the Japan Chain Stores Association, the total sales of the major supermarkets nationwide of 10,798 last month totaled over 1,083.3 billion yen.

When comparing the stores that are still operating, sales exceeded the same month last year by 1.3%, the first increase in two months.

Due to factors such as the closure of the sales floor due to the spread of infection, clothing items declined by 33.1% and household items such as household goods fell by 2.8%, while many people spend their time at home. This is because food sales, which account for about 70%, grew by 9.1%.

Atsushi Inoue, Managing Director of Japan Chain Stores Association, said, “It is expected that daily life will gradually become normal, but the risks have not disappeared, and demand for food products and other products that support home-based living will increase. It seems that it will continue to a certain degree. On the other hand, there is concern that consumption will remain sluggish due to the deterioration of employment and income and the slump in consumer sentiment."
