Toyota Supra 2.0 - DR

Born with a 3 liter 340hp original BMW engine, the Toyota Supra "goes downmarket" by now also offering a 2.0 Turbo. More precisely, it is aimed at a new clientele, or even two. First of all, there will be those who crack down on the look of the Japanese coupe, which is substantially identical to that of the three liters, and for whom the purchase price, revised downward copiously, will be decisive. Because from € 53,900, the Supra 2.0 is… € 12,000 (!) Cheaper than its big sister. And then there will be the others, those looking for a Supra that they can fully exploit on the road.

Because with the 3.0, the power and the efficiency are such that one often has to calm one's ardor behind the wheel. This also applies to most models of more than 300 nags, and this if we want to stay at decent gaits, even before having exploited even half the potential of the car. With a lowered power, this Supra 2.0 allows you to make the most of the engine and general capabilities. This is all the more true since mechanical downsizing is accompanied by a reduction of 100 kilos. This compactness also allows the engine to be repositioned towards the rear, and therefore a weight distribution that is now optimal: 50/50.

Pleasure and versatility

On the road, despite its turbo engine, this Supra does not hesitate to go for high revs and does not choke too early when you go up to the red zone of the tachometer. This does not prevent it from also offering good availability, including under 2,000 rpm since the torque of 400 Nm is available from 1,550 rpm. The exercise from 0 to 100 km / h is carried out in 5.2 seconds - 0.8 more than with the 3 liters - but the sensations on board nonetheless remain frank and clear in all circumstances, in particular thanks to excellent motor skills.

All of this is further exacerbated when you activate Sport mode and take control of the automatic transmission using the steering wheel paddles. In active driving, this Supra is very incisive but stays the course with astonishing ease. And if in addition we deactivate the trajectory control, it accepts drifting with just as much ease! Whether it's driving precision or real fun, experienced drivers will appreciate it.

But for this Toyota to be really perfect, we would have liked a more communicative steering, with a less sanitized rendering than in this case, as well as a more worked engine sound. Because if a few clicks sometimes flatter the ear, the acoustic part remains too artificial.

In the end, this Supra 2.0 will be perfectly usable for everyday use, while providing real pleasure to its driver "on demand". However, you will have to watch your right foot or risk increasing the number of passages at the pump: 11 l / 100km during our test, for 7.4 l / 100 km announced (168 gCO2 / km).
