Commerce is going to be closed this 2020 one of every three days, the third of the year, if we add the months of stoppage due to the pandemic and on Sundays and holidays that the autonomous communities do not allow to open. For this reason, the sector asks for flexible business hours in order to mitigate the impact of the crisis.

This was stated today by Alfonso Merry del Val, president of Anged, the national association of large distribution companies, which includes companies such as El Corte Inglés, Ikea and Carrefour. The manager recalled that since the state of alarm was decreed, the trade has closed 91 days.

"We have to take exceptional measures to recover this enormous loss of activity and employment that has a direct impact on our industry. For this reason, it is reasonable to promote a great agreement to extend opening hours to Sundays and holidays during 2020, " he asked during his participation. at the business summit organized by the CEOE.

"If commerce does not open, the consumer will buy more and more through the Internet, as it has done massively during the pandemic. We must all compete with the same rules and offer opportunities to all commerce," he pointed out.

Merry del Val has asked the Government not to turn the economy into a "fiscal and legislative hell" and regretted that the Government has not drawn up a "concrete and clear" plan for the reconstruction of the country.

Loss of billing

According to the latest OECD report, during the state of alarm and de-escalation, trade has subtracted 9.5 points from GDP. In 2020 , commerce will lose some 30,000 million turnover, especially in non-food categories , where the drop in sales has exceeded 50%, "he said.

"Far from interventionism, this confidence in the private sector is essential and should guide government action towards recovery," said Merry del Val, who believes that "it is not reasonable" to tighten the tax burden on companies and households, something that consider "anachronistic".

The president of the Association of Spanish Supermarket Chains (ACES), Aurelio del Pino, has also called for flexible business hours to mitigate the impact of the crisis. "The growth of 'online' commerce during the state of alarm has been a reality. It is necessary to advance in the liberalization of business hours and eliminate burdens in the opening of new establishments so that physical commerce can compete equally with 'online' and continue to be a generator of wealth and employment, "said Del Pino.

He has asked the institutions "legal certainty" for economic recovery, and a labor regulatory framework that "encourages the hiring and training of workers", which is based on flexibility.
