How to overcome the coming crisis? Like many companies, SNCF was strongly affected by the effects of confinement. Jean-Pierre Farandou, his boss, estimated the loss of revenue linked to the health crisis at 4 billion euros, and appealed for state aid.

The call has obviously been heard since the Minister of Ecological Transition Elisabeth Borne promised this Friday that the SNCF would be supported by the State to help it overcome the coronavirus crisis.

A “financial gesture”

"The SNCF also suffered major financial difficulties due to the crisis, its traffic fell very low (...) obviously we will also help the SNCF to overcome this crisis," said Elisabeth Borne at the microphone of France Info. Aid already granted to other flagships of the transport industry since the State has supported Air France with loans and guarantees totaling 7 billion euros.

"Obviously we want the SNCF to be able to continue to be able to offer train offers at affordable prices for all and that we continue the modernization of the network which is essential", continued Elisabeth Borne. The Minister of Public Accounts Gérald Darmanin already indicated on Monday that the State would make a "financial gesture" towards SNCF to help it cope with the loss of revenue linked to the crisis.

"There will be a financial gesture from the State, whether directly with the SNCF or with institutions that work with the SNCF", like the regions, said Gérald Darmanin.
