The clientele is still not there in hotels, especially those by the sea. The bad weather discourages travelers, and professionals are now counting on the upcoming reopening of borders.

The situation is still very difficult for hotels, a month after the start of deconfinement. Closed during confinement, for lack of public, they are now struggling to find customers, despite the lifting of the prohibitions put in place to fight the Covid-19 epidemic. In Paris, only 24% of hotels have reopened, with an attendance rate equivalent to one in ten customers. Foreign tourists are still absent, the borders not yet reopened, and business trips have hardly resumed.

In the green zone, hoteliers are much more likely to have reopened: 63%; but with strong disparities according to the type of establishment. Thus, only 20% of luxury hotels are open, against three-quarters of low-cost hotels which mainly welcome construction workers.

Bad weather discourages seaside stays

But whatever the range, the clientele is lacking, with an attendance rate of 35% on average. Even the lifting of the travel limitation within a radius of 100 km has not pushed Parisians to the Normandy coast, as some hoteliers hoped. "There is no customer. On the coast, the hotels do not work at all during the week, a little at the weekend", explains to Europe 1 Yann France, the president of the Union of trades and industries of the Calvados hotel industry. The more so as the elements seem to have ganged up against the professionals: "While we had an exceptional time during all the confinement, we have bad weather. It is really bad luck."
