With the passage to phase 2 of Madrid and Barcelona, around a third of all the commerce that still had restrictions has opened its doors. Large non-food distribution groups such as El Corte Inglés, Leroy Merlin and Ikea already operate at 100% (with the gauging restrictions set by the regulations) and have removed their workers from the Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) in which They were.

El Corte Inglés, the largest employer in Spain, together with Mercadona (with a workforce of 90,000 workers), has incorporated the 24,000 employees of the department stores and Sfera that it had under ERTE into work. The workers in the travel area, who are still under ERTE due to force majeure, are left out.

During the confinement weeks in which the store was closed, the department store group was only able to open the food area. Later, with the de-escalation, areas have been opened in some regions. In phase 1, it was possible to delimit public service areas, but with a maximum of 400 square meters.

Yesterday the chain announced that today it already opens all its shopping centers after these months of confinement, with the relevant capacity restrictions. The 31 El Corte Inglés centers that still had limited commercial space (located in the Community of Madrid, Catalonia, and Castilla y León, which had not yet passed to phase 2) have today opened in their entirety and with the same staff as there was before the health crisis.

El Corte Inglés filed an ERTE in late March, affecting 25,900 employees . Half went to work a couple of weeks ago, when some communities moved to phase 2 and shopping malls were already open. But Madrid and Barcelona, which have almost 30% of the weight of trade, were yet to pass.
