  • Q&A: Guide to the mandatory use of masks: when and where to use them, exceptions ...

From today it is mandatory in Spain to use masks for those over six years old. After qualifying throughout the press conferences of the day, what cases and exceptions are established in an order of the Ministry of Health that left many doubts open, today the BOE publishes a text from the Ministry of Transport specifying the use of the mask in public and private transport.

The new order basically applies the obligation established yesterday to public and private transport, with the same exceptions: children under six years of age, people whose use is contraindicated for health reasons, or dependent or disabled people with behavioral changes that make their use unfeasible. .

The use of masks that cover the nose and mouth is mandatory for all users of bus, rail, air and sea transport. In the case of passengers on ships and boats, the use of masks will not be necessary when they are inside their cabin, informs the BOE. Transport service workers who have direct contact with travelers must be provided with masks and have access to hydroalcoholic solutions to practice frequent hand hygiene.

As for private transport, when two occupants travel by motorcycle, they must wear a mask or full face helmet when they do not live together at the same address, as in vehicles with up to nine seats. The use of gloves will be mandatory by the passenger and also by the driver in the case of motorcycles and mopeds intended for shared use

In vehicles with a single row of seats, such as cabins of heavy vehicles, vans, or others, in which more than one occupant is traveling, a mask must be used when they do not live in the same home.

Private vehicles may occupy all their seats as long as all passengers reside at the same address. When this is not fulfilled, two people can move for each row of seats, provided they respect the maximum possible distance between the occupants.

In the case of public and rail transport, it will be the operator who will limit the total occupation of seats so that passengers have an adjoining empty seat that separates them from any other passenger. As the only exception, people who live at the same address may sit in adjoining seats.

Buses will always keep the seats immediately behind the driver empty unless there is a partition.
