INSEE publishes an interactive map on the economic consequences of the coronavirus crisis. The regions of France most affected are Corsica and Île-de-France, while Brittany is doing much better thanks to its agro-food sector.

Regional economies have not all been affected equally by the coronavirus crisis. INSEE publishes a map to measure differences, region by region. Corsica and Ile-de-France suffer a sharp deterioration in their economic activity when Brittany is the least affected region. Surprisingly, the weakest areas are not necessarily those where the virus has circulated the most.

Tourist areas are severely affected by the economic impact of the crisis. According to INSEE, it is in Corsica that it is most felt. In fact, a third of the local economy is based on tourism, hotels, cafes and restaurants. Île-de-France comes second, because of the hyper-concentration on its territory of service and office activities which are idling. For these regions, resumption of activity is crucial. As a reminder, Île-de-France represents a third of French economic activity.

During the # COVID19 containment, the loss of economic activity in each region depends a priori above all on its sectoral structure. An insight into the point of # conjuncture @ InseeFr of May 7 therefore attempts a territorial variation of the estimated losses https://t.co/Z1kz9RvSKhpic.twitter.com/9asHFEngPv

Aeronautics and viticulture impacted in the southwest

Brittany, little affected in terms of health, manages to preserve its economic activity thanks to its agro-food sector. The operation of this sector was in fact almost not hampered by containment, in particular due to the high demand for food.

INSEE also publishes department by department figures. Haute-Garonne is very impacted due to the importance of the aeronautical industry. Behind Airbus are some 500 small and medium-sized subcontracting companies. More generally, the south-west of the country is suffering from the drop in wine consumption. The wine sector is already planning to transform the surplus wine into hydroalcoholic gel.
