“Aiming for zero CO2 emissions in 30 years” JR East Japan May 13 4:47

JR East has announced the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions to virtually zero by 2050, 30 years from now. In order to reduce the use of electricity generated from fossil fuels, we are working on the commercialization of vehicles using fuel cells and the generation of electricity using wind and solar power.

Based on the framework of the "Paris Agreement," which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to virtually zero in the latter half of this century, JR East has set its goals.

According to this, we are aiming to halve the carbon dioxide emissions of 2.15 million tons in fiscal 2013 to 1.08 million tons in fiscal 2030, and to achieve virtually zero in 2050, 30 years later.

In addition to working to improve the energy-saving performance of railway vehicles to achieve the goal, we will start experiments on vehicles that use fuel cells that run on electricity generated from hydrogen from the next fiscal year, and aim to put them into practical use.

In addition, we are proceeding with the construction of power generation facilities such as wind power and solar power mainly along the railway lines in the Tohoku region, and we plan to make about 50% to 60% of the power used in the railway business renewable energy in 2050.

Yuji Fukasawa, President of JR East, said at a press conference, "While railways emit less carbon dioxide than other transportation systems, we would like to work on decarbonization while advancing technological innovation."
