Retail sales suffered a historic slump in March after confinement was decreed

Commercial activity suffered a historical collapse last March. The state of alarm and the measures of confinement of the population decreed by the Government to fight the pandemic of the coronavirus caused that the sales of the retail stores fell by 14.3% in inter-annual rates during that month, without a doubt the biggest fall suffered for this index that is updated today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The only sector that resists the generalized collapse is that of food, which not only does not drop but also experiences a rebound both with respect to the previous month and compared to the same period last year. The increase in both cases is around 8%, and shows that the population has continued to buy intensively during confinement .
