  • Coronavirus. The labor market fell back in March to its worst data since 2013 without counting the effect of ERTE

The monthly payroll of pensions relative to the month of April confirms the second consecutive drop in the number of pensions, a totally anomalous behavior that is directly conditioned by the coronavirus pandemic. According to Social Security data, between April and March there was a reduction of 6,750 pensions, while between February and March the drop was 5,753 pensions, so the joint drop in the period affected by Covid-19 was somewhat more than 12,500 pensions .

From the Ministry they explain that this behavior is, in fact, directly related to the coronavirus, but they maintain that, at least for now, these figures do not reflect the high number of deaths in all their dimensions. " The processing of many benefits has been delayed due to the situation, " they point out in Social Security. "In March, as a consequence of the state of alarm, the drop in cases initiated has reached 26.8%, they add in the department led by José Luis Escrivá.

Most of the behavior of the number of benefits, therefore, is explained by "the social isolation due to the coronavirus" as well as by "the slowdown in the procedures resulting from this exceptional situation", to which they add that the effect by the deaths is still very little noticeable and it will be from next month when, without a doubt, the deaths will be noticed more intensely.

"It should be noted that in March the figures do not yet clearly reflect an impact of the coronavirus, an effect that will probably be seen more clearly in the following months," they summarize.
