Governments should not forget the energy transition in their post-Covid-19 recovery plans, Engie's president Jean-Pierre Clamadieu called this Friday.

"The energy and climate transition, we talk a little less today for understandable reasons, but it remains a major challenge," he said on BFM Business. “The post-crisis period will consist of major recovery plans. (…) In this recovery plan, the energy and climate transition must have an important role to play, and Engie will be ready to provide answers and solutions, ”he added.

“Competitive” renewable energies

Asked about the risk that the fall in oil and gas prices could slow down this conversion, he replied: "It shouldn't be." “Renewable energies have reached levels of real economic competitiveness. Governments must be very sensitive in the way they will mobilize the funds that will be poured on the economy after this crisis, they must be very careful that we do not forget this climate emergency. This is the next crisis, it is longer term but we have the opportunity to prepare for it, ”he said.

Regarding Engie, he said he was “very confident in the solidity of the group's model. The portfolio of activities, with management of gas infrastructure, electricity production and services allows us to get through the crisis in good conditions ”.

No position on dividends

However, he did not reply when the journalist asked him whether Engie, in the context of the epidemic, was going to pay an exceptional bonus to his agents or renounce his dividends, referring these questions to possible future decisions.

According to him, approximately half of the group's workforce today works, 25,000 in telework, 15,000 in the field, managing emergency interventions in private homes and support for critical installations. As for the governance crisis that recently hit the group, and the departure of its director Isabelle Kocher, Jean-Pierre Clamadieu said he was "impressed by the work done by the current management team", "a team capable of 'bring the group across the river', he said.
