Mercadona has decided to give a 20% bonus to its workers (plus the gross salary for March) to compensate them for the work they are doing these days in which there is a special influx of people in supermarkets as a result of restrictions to contain the coronavirus.

"We are a strategic sector that has the responsibility of supplying citizens every day. Therefore, the management committee, with the president at the head, have decided to value the effort that the workers are making with this premium ", company sources point out.

Mercadona is the chain with the highest distribution quota in Spain (nine out of 10 consumers buy in its stores, according to Kantar). It is also the largest employer in the country, with a workforce of 90,000 workers.

Since last Monday the closure of schools in Madrid was decreed due to the coronavirus, the influx in supermarkets has shot up, especially those of the Valencian chain, and there have been scenes of massive shopping. The president of the company, Juan Roig, already assured last Tuesday that the supply of the stores is fully assured.
