But, be careful, because to then have the right to travel on French roads, you must first go through certain procedures which depend on the country where you bought the machine.

Compliant plates

In all cases, be aware that a vehicle acquired abroad must comply with the safety and construction rules provided by the French Highway Code. Similarly, he must display valid license plates, under penalty of immobilization.

Please note, depending on the State, it is possible to obtain a temporary plate intended for export, while others may require the deletion of the car from their national registers or the return of the plates before leaving their territory. Who says import of expensive equipment from abroad, necessarily says taxes. Thanks to the common market, however, you will have no customs duty to settle if your new vehicle comes from a country of the European Union. On the other hand, to be able to register it with the National Agency for Secure Titles (ANTS), you must first obtain a tax certificate called tax discharge (only the purchase of a trailer or an agricultural vehicle exception to the rule). For this, contact the corporate tax department of your place of residence by presenting the purchase invoice, the gray card obtained in the foreign country, an identity document and proof of domicile in France. Please note, you must make the request within fifteen days of delivery of the car.

As soon as the vehicle comes from a country outside the Union, you will have to pay customs duties and VAT. In addition, make sure that the seller has provided you with a certificate of conformity to a CE type or an attestation of identification to a CE type, otherwise you will also need to obtain an "isolated acceptance report" (RTI). with the competent regional environmental department (Dreal).
