After the success of the Zoé, Renault is embarking on low-cost electricity with the Dacia Spring. A new model which nevertheless relies on the pillar of the brand: an attractive price.

The coronavirus may have led to the cancellation of the Geneva auto show, but Renault still wanted to present its latest creation: a 100% electric Dacia. Called Spring, this car reflects the manufacturer's confidence in the boom in sales of electric cars. But if the engine changes, the principle remains the same: the Spring "takes up the key elements" of the Dacia, namely "value for money without competition on the market", explains to the microphone of Europe 1 Xavier Martinet, marketing director of Renault group.

An attractive price

Because Dacia's number one argument remains above all the price. If nothing has filtered so far, a range around 15,000 euros, ecological bonus of 6,000 euros included, seems to take shape. Aggressive prices [a Renault Zoé costing around 24,000 euros, note] which would be possible thanks to a substantial increase in sales, but also to a modernization of production. "We will reduce battery costs by around 30% and that of engines by 20%," said Bruno Vanel, director of the electric vehicle program at Renault.

But we will have to wait before settling behind the wheel of this Dacia Spring, since the small city SUV will not be marketed until 2021.

A car produced in China?

This new model will not be produced in France according to the Renault unions, which point out that it is an electric version of the Kwid, a low-cost car made in China which already exists on the Indian markets and Brazilians.

After the success of the Zoé, the second best-selling electric car in Europe in 2019, Renault is therefore diversifying its green range. The Twingo will also be entitled to a lithium facelift this year, while models like Clio, Captur and Mégane should be available in hybrid versions.
