The coronavirus is already noted in the arrival of tourists to Spain. Our country received 4.1 million international tourists in January, which is 1.4% less than in the same month of 2019.

This is reflected in the data of the Tourist Movement Statistics on Borders (Frontur). This is the biggest decline in the arrival of tourists in twelve months since May last year (-1.6%) and is the second consecutive fall after the one registered in December (-0.9%).

It was in this month that the alarm for the coronavirus began to emerge. The first cases detected in Wuhan (China) arose at the end of December and were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) in January.

The coronavirus, in fact, has caused the tourist sector of the European Union to have lost two million overnight stays since the beginning of January due to the absence of Chinese and that has a cost of 1,000 million euros per month, as indicated on Monday European Commissioner of the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, in an interview with the French channel BFMTV.

By nationalities, the United Kingdom continues to be the main tourist issuing country, with 718,248 visitors, representing 17.4% of the total. The effects of Brexit continue to impact the arrival of Britons, which fell 11.0% in January compared to last year.

Germany and France are the next countries with the most tourists visiting Spain. Germany, with 493,711 visitors, fell 4.6% in arrivals, while France, with 480,364, contributed 7.7% more.
