The coronavirus epidemic may jeopardize the fragile recovery of the world economy , said Kristalina Georgieva, head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Sunday before finance ministers and central governors of the G20 meeting in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia ).

"The projected recovery ... is fragile," Georgieva said. " The COVID-19 virus has affected economic activity in China and may put the recovery at risk, " he added. "I explained to the G-20 that even if it is able to contain the virus quickly, the growth of China and the rest of the world will be impacted."

The virus caused 2,345 victims in China, disrupted transport, trade and raised concerns of investors, as companies were forced to close their doors.

Georgieva said the epidemic will reduce global growth by around 0.1% and limit China's growth to 5.6% this year .

"The G20 is an important forum to help give the world economy a stronger base," the IMF chief insisted, urging member countries to cooperate to contain the spread of the virus.
