The European Commission (EC) on Friday imposed a fine of 6,678,000 euros to the Spanish hotel group Meliá for operating with clauses that discriminated between its customers depending on the place of residence, which violates the European competition regulations.

"The Commission's investigation showed that Meliá had signed contracts with tour operators that limited the active and passive sales of hotel accommodations," the community executive said in a statement.

The violation for which this sanction is imposed lasted during 2014 and 2015 and began to be investigated in 2017.
