In the event of an unchanged tax situation, the income tax declaration becomes tacit. - IStock / City Presse

After having favored paper for a long time, the tax authorities have slowly taken the dematerialization train in motion, to the point of no longer giving taxpayers a choice. The objective is clear: reduce processing costs by automating procedures.
An important milestone was passed in 2019 with the revolution caused by the introduction of withholding tax. It was also accompanied by a much less publicized measure: the obligation for everyone to file their tax return by Internet (except those who are not able to use the Web). If 2020 does not bring other major changes, an additional step is taken.

A tacit declaration

We must first remember that despite the monthly levy of taxes directly on wages and pensions, taxpayers must continue to complete an annual income tax return in the spring, in order to take stock and declare any tax rebates. However, precisely the novelty of this year relieves some of this task.

As before, people whose situation has not changed since their last tax assessment will receive a pre-filled form. But instead of having to go to their online space on Impôts.gouv.fr to validate the information retained by the taxman, they now have nothing to do. The declaration of income thus becomes tacit, without any steps to be taken.

The downside of this automation is therefore that if taxpayers do not thoroughly check the data entered and forget to report changes if any, they will be used as is to calculate the taxation.
