Valentine's Day poses the same dilemma for lovers every year: what gift to give to someone else? In this matter, there are no rules: it all depends on how you conceive this party, your means, the tastes of your loved one and what you bought from him last year. From the small symbolic present to the great romantic trip, the palette of choices is very vast. As for those who run out of ideas, there are still a few bestsellers that fall into time.

Flowers to please every time

Although the figures fluctuate depending on the polls and the years, the flowers remain undoubtedly a staple of the feast of lovers. Some 1.3 million plants (bouquets and plants) are indeed offered on this occasion. Queen of the day, the red rose, symbol of passion and love, is obviously the most in demand among florists. In 2018, Novethic, a specialist in responsible finance, evaluated that out of the 22 million bouquets of roses sold each year in France, 3 to 5% were for Valentine's Day. A gift straight from the Netherlands (87%), for the vast majority of flowers.

Chocolates for gourmets

The French love sweets and especially chocolates. With a consumption of 7.31 kg per year and per capita, cocoa is clearly popular. And the more concentrated, the better. According to the National Chocolate Syndicate, gourmets from France "are distinguished by a propensity to consume more dark chocolate than the rest of Europe".

However, if tablets, bars and sweets are tasted throughout the year, the holiday periods, especially Christmas (up to 10% of annual sales) and Easter (4%) represent a sacred peak in consumption. Without significantly inflating the turnover of chocolate makers, Valentine's Day also contributes to boosting their sales by allowing professionals to have a very good day.

Jewels to shine brightly

More expensive but necessarily more personalized, jewelry is also king during Valentine's Day. With Christmas and Mother's Day, this celebration is one of the three highlights of the year for merchants.
Well aware of this potential, professionals compete in imagination and creativity to offer you a multitude of pieces capable of showing your love for your dear half. In addition to the heart-shaped motif, of course available in abundance, you can for example set your sights on a double ring, a padlocked pendant or even a "Love" handcuff bracelet.

In gold, platinum, silver or as a simple charm, the coin of your choice will necessarily have a strong meaning if you offer it on this special day. Especially since, according to a survey conducted in 2018 by the Pandora brand, 77% of women say they receive flowers or chocolates, when they would like to be offered ornaments.

Perfumes captivate lovers

Perfumers also rub their hands on Valentine's Day. And for good reason, this holiday is one of the three key periods in terms of sales according to their national federation. In order to maximize their turnover, professionals are offering a myriad of new fragrances on this occasion, presented with great publicity in January.

Sensual and tender, the perfume is then designed as a true declaration of love. If the elixir must of course correspond to the tastes of the loved one, Valentine's Day allows you to spice up your habits by betting on a bewitching exhalation which will, without fail, capsize your partner. Rather oriental and spicy for some, floral and gourmet for others, this is a delicate way to say "I love you".
