“We are helping Asia switch to cleaner energy through gas and, frankly, through our pipelines to Europe, including Nord Stream 2, we are helping Europe also switch to cleaner energy,” he said.

That is why, as Dmitriev pointed out, the Russian side “is not very happy with the sanctions against Nord Stream-2.”

“Because we believe that these are sanctions for the transition of Europe to a more environmentally friendly energy market, but this is a separate issue,” he added.

According to him, gas is very environmentally friendly.

“It produces 45% less emissions than coal and 30% less than oil. And, obviously, we are a major player in the oil and gas industry, the largest global player in the gas market with 25% of world reserves and 20% of world exports, ”said the head of the RDIF.

At the end of 2019, the United States announced sanctions against Nord Stream 2. The Swiss company Allseas then suspended work on the project.

As stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, US attempts to hinder the implementation of the project contrary to the opinion of the EU countries are a blatant example of unfair competition.
