• Spain: Employee salaries grow eight times less than those of their managers
  • Germany: The unprecedented salaries of German DAX executives: 7.5 million per year
  • Managers: Banking pays the best salaries in Spain, with salaries of up to 300,000 euros
  • Ibex. The business of companies grows 65% while they contract salaries 0.5%

The purchasing power of Spanish employees has grown by 1.29% since 2007, since since then their salaries have increased by 18.69% and accumulated inflation has increased by 17.4%, while that of managers is a 5.99% higher.

This is taken from the 2007-2019 salary evolution study, presented this Thursday at a press conference by the president of Icsa Group, Ernest Poveda, and the Eada Business School professor Jordi Costa, and which collects data from July 2007 to July 2019 .

In the case of middle managers, they increased their salaries by 23.35% , which represents 5.95 percentage points more than accumulated inflation, while Spanish managers saw their salary grow 23.39% in the last 12 years, which translates into 5.99 percentage points more than inflation.

Compared to the previous year, employees increased their salary by 1.89%, compared to 3.43% of middle managers and 4.58% of managers, respectively, which, according to Poveda, means that the wage gap among more and less skilled workers, the perpetuation continues .

For its part, Costa, who has highlighted the more than three million people currently unemployed in Spain, has called for better linking university careers with business demands and has placed the cost of Social Security as a brake on the increase of wages and job creation in SMEs, which generate more than 60% of employment.

Negotiation and non-taxation

Poveda has argued that the numbers are better than 12 years ago, but he has warned that there is now some economic slowdown and many uncertainties, so he has considered it essential that all labor modifications promoted by the Government be agreed and not imposed by royal decree .

Asked about an eventual rise in the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI) by the new Government, they have argued that one of the possibilities is that it will create more underground economy : "There is some fear about the increase in the SMI," said Poveda.

"The SMI comes into play when there is no agreement that regulates workers' salaries. Now would be the time when there should probably be meetings between employers, unions and the new government to see how to face the future," Costa added.

Sectors

By sectors, the managers who charge the most are those of banking and insurance (92,478 euros per year), followed by those in charge of industrial companies and those of the service sector, while those of construction, whose salaries have experienced a Slight recovery since 2015, and those of the commerce and tourism sector, are the lowest.

Poveda has lamented that the tourism sector, which represents 12% of GDP, has had a negative evolution since 2013 and is the one with the lowest wages: "It is being the least favored in the distribution of wealth created."

In the case of employees, the lowest average salary is also in the commerce and tourism sector (17,401 euros per year), while the highest, after years of growth, is in the industry (27,332 euros per year) - something that They have attributed to the lack of specialized workers- and banking and insurance.
