Two rockets hit this ultra-secure area of the Iraqi capital on Wednesday shortly before midnight, 24 hours after the Iranian response against the United States in Iraq.

With our correspondent in Baghdad, Lucile Wassermann

Two muffled noises followed by the siren sounded in the "green zone", this enclave in the center of the Iraqi capital that houses the main political institutions, including the American Embassy. Two rockets have once again targeted this ultra-secure neighborhood.

It is indeed the third attack in just one week. These shootings have been recurrent in Baghdad for several months now, but have intensified after the death of General Qassem Soleimani and the Iraqi military commander Abu Mahdi Al Mohandes. This warlord was number two in the Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of militias now integrated into the Iraqi security apparatus.

These armed groups continue today to call for revenge. " After the Iranian response comes the Iraqi response ," promised one of its leaders, threatening the United States.

About fifteen shots

In total, since the end of October, nearly fifteen rocket attacks have targeted American interests. They are never claimed, but Washington attributes a part of them to the Iraqi armed groups close to Tehran.

If the weather now seems to be de-escalating between the United States and Iran, it is difficult to say the same for Iraqi factions.
