Benyamin Netanyahu congratulated Donald Trump after the death of his general Qassem Soleimani in Iraq following an American strike on January 3, 2020. For him, the United States had the right to "defend itself".

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to the death of Soleimani by defending American action and congratulating Donald Trump: " Just as Israel has the right to defend itself, the United States has exactly the same right." Qassem Soleimani is responsible for the deaths of American citizens and other innocent people and was planning new attacks, "he said.

Earlier today, Netanyahu, on the road to Greece, heard the news of the death of Qassem Soleimani. The Prime Minister of Israel paid a visit focused on the exploitation of gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean. But, a sign of the volatility of the situation and the risk of attack, in the eyes of Israel, this Friday morning, the head of government decided to shorten his visit and return to Jerusalem.

Fear of reprisals

According to the Prime Minister’s office, Benjamin Netanyahu was kept informed of the situation in real time. And his Defense Minister gathered this Friday the military commanders at the army headquarters to assess the risk of reprisals on the country.

From the early hours of the day, the army instructed to close the only ski resort in the territory controlled by Israel. Mount Hermon, in the occupied and annexed Golan, which is only a stone's throw from the line of demarcation with Syria where Iranian forces are present. This station had already been the target of attacks in 2019.
