The number of housing units started last month is a double-digit decrease for the first time in 10 months in one year-Dec. 27 4:05

Last month, housing starts nationwide fell by 12% compared to the same month last year. Rental apartments and condominiums fell sharply, dropping double digits for the first time in 10 months.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the number of homes started nationwide last month was 73,523, down 12.7% from the same month last year.

It is the first consecutive year in 10 months that the minus width will be double digits after the fifth consecutive month of decline.

This was due to a 17% decrease in rental apartments such as rental apartments due to the problem of illegal financing of investment real estate, and a significant decrease in the number of condominium starts in the Tokyo and Kinki areas. This was mainly due to a 10% decrease in “condominiums”.

In addition, the number of “owned homes,” which indicate custom-built houses, decreased by 7%.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, "owners' homes, which are relatively susceptible to the consumption tax hike, have been declining more slowly than in the previous survey, but need to see the impact in a slightly longer period."
