New car sales in Japan last month decreased 12% year-on-year

The number of new cars sold in the country last month decreased by 12.7% compared to the same month last year. This is because the number of customers visiting the store decreased due to Typhoon No. 19 in October.

According to announcements by the Japan Automobile Sales Association, the number of new cars sold in Japan last month was 385,859 units, down 12.7% from the same month last year, decreasing for the second consecutive month.

Of these, ordinary cars, small cars, trucks, etc. decreased 14.6% to 239844 units, and mini cars decreased 9.4% to 147,015 units.

Regarding the reason for the decrease in sales volume, industry groups said that the impact of the decrease in the number of customers visiting stores, mainly in the areas where flood damage was caused by Typhoon No. 19 in October, continued.

On the other hand, regarding the impact of the increase in the consumption tax rate in October, the industry group says, “We have not yet been able to judge, and we need to compare the data before and after the tax increase for a while.”
