In the second round of confrontation after Israel's assassination of an Islamic Jihad commander in Gaza, new rockets were fired from the Palestinian enclave on Wednesday (November 13th) after Israeli strikes. After a total of 18 dead and around 50 wounded on the Palestinian side, Egypt and the UN are trying to mediate.

At each episode of tension between Gaza's armed groups and Israel , Egypt acts as a mediator. On Tuesday, November 12, Cairo has once again undertaken to restore calm between the two parties, negotiations are underway with Israelis and armed groups in Gaza.

The Egyptian intelligence services at the helm are also supported by the United Nations (UN): the UN Special Coordinator for the peace process went to Cairo urgently Tuesday.

Israeli officials have reportedly told their interlocutors that they want to avoid a military escalation after the operation that killed one of the Islamic Jihad commanders. According to Israeli security sources, Hamas also wants restraint: the spokesman of the ruling Gaza movement has said that if Gaza's armed groups continue to respond to Israeli bombing, they will do so " with wisdom and understanding ."

On the other hand, the dialogue seems more complicated with Islamic Jihad. The movement, targeted since Tuesday, November 12 in the morning by the Israeli army, refuses for the moment to stop the firing of rockets. His secretary general said as soon as the tension resumed: " we go to war ". The risk of escalation remains high.

Targeted by rockets Islamic Jihad, Tel Aviv reduces its activity

Since Tuesday morning, nearly 250 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip to Israel and especially to Tel Aviv. There were no deaths on the Israeli side, unlike the 18 Palestinians, but the resumption of hostilities left at least 48 injured and Israel slowed down.

Around 8 o'clock in the morning, the rocket alarm rang. The young Noa Bräuer is a baker and starts her day early: she was already at work. But Tuesday, the activity was reduced: " The bakery was pretty empty all day and the street, which is still very busy, was totally empty most of the time, she tells RFI . But I think my friends with children had to stay at home because there was no school or kindergarten. "

On social networks and messaging platforms, rocket impact videos circulated throughout the day, raising the concern of some Israelis. But for Shay Biton, the day was pretty serene. " It is unlikely to be touched, opine this soldier reserve . It's too far for their technologies, and they can not aim. "

A military operation, political strategy for Netanyahu ?

Guy Kerem, he, relies on the technology of the Israeli army: the missile shield intercepted 90% of the rockets threatening inhabited areas. But this young man, a left-wing voter, wonders about a possible political opportunism on the part of Benyamin Netanyahu: " The timing is very advantageous," he speculates . This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened and it's a little surprising. But these are just suppositions, we can not be sure . "

Questions also taken by deputies. For the latter, a military operation would enhance the chances of creating a national unity government , which could allow the outgoing Prime Minister to remain in power.
