Ahmed Al Khatib, Chief Executive of Real Estate Development and Delivery at Expo 2020 Dubai, has confirmed that the construction work of Al Wasl Square has finally been completed, while the panels are being installed on the Dome structure, which will be reflected in the light shows during the event. Projectors are also being installed.

He pointed out that the dome of the arena was completed over 14 months, which is equivalent to about 11 tennis courts, noting that the exhibition will include the cultivation of 15 thousand areas.

According to the planned schedule, Al Wasl Square will be fully completed by April 2020, with all its components including electrical, photovoltaic, utilities, gardens and water bodies. Months of hard work and meticulous planning culminated in the successful crowning of the giant Al Wasl Square, the flagship of Expo 2020 Dubai, and the crown of the world's finest crown.

Placing the huge crown on top of the giant steel dome took hours of hard and meticulous geometry, with a dome of 724,000 cubic meters and a height of 67.5 meters, exceeding the length of Italy's Leaning Tower.

Covering the 130-meter-wide Al Wasl Square in the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai, the steel dome will be Dubai's newest landmark.

Ahmed Al Khatib, CEO of Real Estate Development and Delivery at Expo 2020 Dubai, who oversaw this huge work, said that the crowning of the Al Wasl Square was a spectacular event and one of the most challenging and accurate engineering operations in the world. For several reasons, including the complexities of accessing the site.

Khatib pointed out that «lifting the mass of the weight and magnitude of the crown of the dome (Square Wasl) is a very complex engineering process, with a lot of variables as well, such as a shift in the direction of wind, or the temperature of the air, variables may significantly affect our calculations, so the follow-up and re Continuous evaluation was essential throughout the process of lifting the crown to the top of the dome. ”

550 tons of steel

The weight of the steel component in the crown of the dome of the "square of the focal point" to 550 tons, a length of 22.5 meters, so it was necessary to be in a proper and accurate position on top of the steel bars, with a margin of error not exceeding three millimeters.

The process was carried out using a technique called strand jacking, while the total weight - including components and equipment needed to lift the dome during the operation - amounted to 830 tons, equivalent to the weight of 600 small cars.

18 hydraulic jacks, supported by steel tension ropes connected to 18 makeshift rolls, were used to raise the steel crown gradually.
