After withdrawing from northern Syria, the United States announced the maintenance of a " small number of soldiers " in the country. In recent hours, Washington has even announced the sending of reinforcements in eastern Syria to " protect " the oil fields.

In recent weeks American soldiers have left northern Syria , but the United States has very quickly confirmed the maintenance of a base in southern Syria, not far from the Jordanian and Israeli borders. US soldiers also remain stationed in eastern Syria. In all, they represent 200 soldiers and this presence will be " reinforced ", according to a US official who did not specify the extent of the additional deployment.
The objective is " to prevent the oil fields from falling into the hands of the Islamic State organization or any other destabilizing group ," according to the US official. It is true that when the jihadists occupied this area of Deir Ezzor, the exploitation and smuggling of oil allowed them to finance their fight.
Washington intends to keep control of these precious oil wells. Angry at Donald Trump's policy in Syria, Brett McGurk , the former US envoy in charge of the international anti-jihadist coalition, recently warned against the unethical scenario that the United States would participate in the gold trade black owned by the Syrian state.
