The average salary of the Spanish economy has registered a historical maximum . During 2011 and 2017, the figure ranged between 1,630 and 1,640 euros per month. While in 2018, that variable was relegated and stood at 1,658 euros per month , 1.2% higher than the previous year. This figure reveals the highest value of the average remuneration since the statistics exist, as reflected in the data published by the Adecco Group Institute, the study and dissemination center of the Adecco Group, at the 7th Annual Adecco Monitor on Wages.

However, the figures keep other realities of employees. For example, the salary gap between those who receive the highest salaries versus those who receive the lowest salaries. Here the extremes coexist. The 10% of wage earners who receive less have an average salary of 464 euros per month while the 10% who receive the most, invoice 4,618 euros per month, that is, 10 times more than the lowest salaries. The general average is 1,911 euros per month.

Although the difference between the two groups is evident, it has not been the highest, it was 2015 when the maximum disparity was reached with a ratio of 11.4 times between the highest and the lowest salaries.

While the average salary of the Spaniards has reached an all-time high, however, in terms of their purchasing power, the result is not as positive. Specifically, 1.1% less in the last five years. This cut is equivalent to a loss of 18 euros per month or 216 per year.

The loss splashes to the three sizes of companies, but above all to the large firms , reinforcing the idea that the payment of higher salaries does not mean that the purchasing power of their salaries evolves in parallel or better. Thus, large companies had a cumulative fall of 3.1% in the purchasing power of the average salary. While in the media there was a reduction of 0.2%, while in the small ones the cut was only 0.1%.

The panorama by sectors

Each of the three main productive sectors presents particularities with respect to the behavior of the average salary. The top of the ranking is the industrial sector , which in 2018, registered an advance of 0.9% , reaching 1,926 euros per month, which is its maximum historical value. Thus, it accumulates an increase of 3.5% compared to 2013.

While the average remuneration of the construction sector, stands out from two years of losses and grows 0.7% , leaving 1.618 euros per month.

For its part, the average salary for services has had its best year since 2009 , with a 1.3% increase that has allowed it to reach 1,613 euros, the highest historical remuneration in the sector.

Along the same lines as in companies, the average salary also lost purchasing power in the three major economic sectors. In the industrial area it has lost 0.8%, while that of services has suffered a fall of 0.4% . The worst result falls in the construction sector, with a decrease of 1%.
