• Record: Take the longest flight in the world to investigate the jet lag

A plane of the Australian airline Qantas landed this Sunday in Sydney after completing a flight from New York of 19 hours and 16 minutes without stop to study the impact of these displacements on health , in what was an essay of the longest commercial flight of the world.

The flight, which landed at 7.16 local time (20.16 GMT on Saturday) and covered a total distance of 16,200 kilometers, is the first of the three test planned with the new Boeing 787-9s between Sydney and London, and Sydney and New York

"This flight is a really important precedent for aviation. It is hoped that it will become the advance of a regular service that will accelerate the way people travel from one end of the world to the other," said Alan Joyce , executive director of Qantas Group, in a statement from the airline after landing at the Sydney airport.

"What has already become clear is how much time we can save . Our regular flight from New York to Sydney with a stop (QF12) took off three hours before the direct flight, but we arrived a few minutes earlier, which means we saved quite a lot of time not having to stop, "Joyce added.

A total of 49 people traveled on the plane , six of them volunteers who were equipped with portable technology to observe their vitals and followed a sleep plan, food and drink intake, and physical movements designed to counteract the time lag.

In the research, which is the first of its kind in the world and has the participation of scientists from the University of Sydney and the governmental Cooperative Research Center for Surveillance, Safety and Productivity, the suitability of the on board services.

"The night flights usually start with a dinner and then the lights go out. For this flight, we started with lunch and kept the lights on during the first six hours to adapt to the destination's schedule. That implies that one begins to reduce the gap schedule from the beginning , "Joyce said.

Qantas plans to operate direct commercial flights to New York and London from the Australian east coast (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) starting in 2022 .

The Australian airline offers since 2018 a 17-hour direct flight between Perth, on the Australian west coast, and London , which the airline has already used to obtain information on the impact of long-haul journeys on passengers and crew.

The longest nonstop flight is currently offered by Singapore Airlines , which since last year links the city-state airport with that of Newark, in New Jersey (USA) in 18 hours .
