The consumer price index (CPI) recorded an annual increase of 0.1% in September, two tenths less than the increase in August and the lowest level in three years.

According to the advanced indicator of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the drop in electricity prices has influenced this evolution compared to the increase recorded in 2018.

Regarding the monthly evolution of prices , the advanced data indicates that they remain in front of August (0.0%).

Prices started the year with a 1% rise in January and the evolution of the annual CPI rate remained up until April: 1.1% in February, 1.3% in March and 1.5% in April.

From there the increases began to moderate: 0.8% in May, 0.4% in June, 0.5% in July and 0.3% in August .

If confirmed, this increase of 0.1% in September would be the lowest since August 2016 , when prices fell by an annual rate of 0.1%. The final inflation figure will be known on October 11.

The INE has also advanced this Monday the variation of the harmonized consumer price index (HICP) -which allows international comparisons- and which stands at 0.2% in September, two tenths less than the previous month. On the other hand, the monthly evolution of the HICP in September is 0.4%.
