According to him, OPAL is one of the extensions of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipelines and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline under construction.

“Since today SP-2 is still unfinished, the court decision refers to supply restrictions on SP-1,” he said.

Chizhov recalled that Nord Stream-1 during its construction was declared by the EU as a “project of pan-European interest."

“Therefore, if SP-1 remains a project of pan-European interest, it is unclear how the use of gas coming from it to the local German OPAL network may violate EU energy solidarity,” the Russian Permanent Representative said.

On September 10, an EU court overturned the decision of the European Commission to change the regime for using the OPAL gas pipeline.

OPAL is a branch pipeline that connects the Nord Stream gas pipeline with the gas transmission system of Central and Western Europe.
