UN experts are publishing a damning report on the situation in Yemen on Tuesday (3 September). They denounce in particular the " multitude of war crimes " committed by the various parties since the beginning of the conflict. The names of " persons likely to be responsible for international crimes ", which remain confidential, have been transmitted, said the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.

Many of the violations " may result in the conviction of persons for war crimes if an independent and competent tribunal is seized of them ", explains the statement of the panel of experts on Yemen, established by the Human Rights Council United Nations in 2017.

War crimes since 2014

Attacks and shootings aimed indiscriminately at civilian populations, use of famine as a weapon of war, torture, rape, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, recruitment of children under 15 years of age: these are the war crimes committed since 2014 in the country according to the experts. Kamel Jendoubi, chairman of the UN group of experts charged with investigating human rights abuses in Yemen, deplores the " lack of international action to hold the parties to the conflict accountable ".

Refrain from supplying weapons

UN experts urge the international community to refrain from providing weapons that could be used in the conflict, and recalls that the " legality of arms transfers by France, the United Kingdom, the states States and other States remains questionable ".

More than 600 interviews with victims and witnesses were conducted, despite the lack of cooperation shown by the coalition and the Yemeni government in carrying out this report, the second on the situation in Yemen.
