Oreshkin commented on the words of trump about a possible US exit from the WTO
The US withdrawal from the World Trade Organization (WTO) may give an impetus to its reform; such a decision by Washington would not be fatal for the WTO. This was stated by Minister of Economic Development of Russia Maxim Oreshkin.
“For the organization itself, the loss of one major player is still not fatal. It is even possible that a serious change in the configuration of “tactical alliances” and interest groups within the WTO, which will inevitably follow the Americans’s exit, will give impetus to its reform, ”Oreshkina quotes TASS.
According to him, at present there is no comparable and effective global alternative to the WTO and is not expected, and there is no reason to refuse it.
According to the Minister, US statements about a possible exit from the WTO look like negotiation techniques.
“This is not the first time that the United States has spoken about the possibility of withdrawing from the WTO. If this kind of “reminder” begins to be heard too often, they become like negotiation techniques designed to impress counterparties on the trade deals under discussion, ”the minister said.
On August 13, US leader Donald Trump admitted that the United States would withdraw from the WTO "if necessary." The rules of the organization, he said, allow other countries to "use the United States."
The Kremlin, commenting on such an opportunity, noted that if the United States leaves the organization, its existence will be in great doubt.
