Food self-sufficiency rate 37%
The food self-sufficiency rate, which indicates how much domestically consumed food was covered by domestic production, was 37% on a calorie basis last fiscal year (2018). This was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and it was the lowest ever, along with 1993 when rice was a record failure.
