- In this way we can succeed in keeping people in work, we can keep our shops and schools open.

Then we can move forward together while we suppress the virus.

The speech was held on Tuesday evening.

But the prime minister had conveyed the same message earlier in the day in parliament, appealing to him to try to prevent the spread of infection.

- We act on the idea that it is better to tune in the stream than in the river.

Among the decisions on Tuesday was an order that pubs, bars and restaurants in England must close at 10 pm, and a call for those who can work from home to do so.

Increased oral protection requirements

Mouth protection will be mandatory for store staff and in taxis, in addition to the requirements that already apply.

Starting on Monday, the maximum number of guests at weddings and receptions is also limited to 15 people, while 30 people are allowed to attend funerals.

The spread of infection is serious, Johnsson states.

- Unfortunately, we, like Spain and other countries, have reached a dangerous turning point.

The news comes in the light of rapidly growing infection rates in the UK, and the day after two of the country's top scientific advisers warned that the country may soon face a situation of 50,000 new cases a day, unless real action is taken.

Without a change of course, the disease could claim hundreds of lives every day in just a few months, according to Johnson.

Schools remain open

The Prime Minister has emphasized that this is not about a far-reaching shutdown of society as in the spring.

For example, schools and universities in England must remain open.

How the rest of the UK and Northern Ireland do is up to them, but according to Johnson, similar measures are planned there as well.

Johnsson said earlier on Tuesday that work on vaccines and other antidotes is continuing, but added:

- If we do not make clear progress, we should assume that the restrictions I am announcing will prevail for perhaps six months.
