A 100-year-old Indonesian woman has recovered from coronavirus, making her the oldest survivor of Covid-19 in the country.

Kamtim (like many Indonesians, she only has one name) returned home this week after a month of hospitalization in Surabaya, the second largest city in the country where she lives.

The governor of the region of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, hoped, by announcing the news, that the story of Kamtim would boost the morale of the elderly, particularly at risk against the virus.

"I hope his recovery will motivate the elderly during this pandemic," he said.

Born in 1920, Kamtim was taken to hospital with symptoms suggesting that she had the coronavirus, which was later confirmed.

Siti Aminah, his daughter-in-law, attributes his healing to "his discipline and persistence".

"Every day, I asked the nurses for news, and they told me that she was very strong and very disciplined to follow her treatment," she told AFP.

Indonesia has officially registered more than 26,000 cases of coronavirus and 1,613 deaths. But the country is one of the least testing countries, and experts say the real numbers are much larger.
