The significance of the Nobel Prize cannot be underestimated, according to Malin Attefall.

- It's the peak of people's careers.

It is the ultimate proof that they have done something important, she says in SVT's Morgonstudion.

A record number have nominated for the award this year - over 800 people.

One of the reasons for the number may be that it is possible to nominate people electronically, according to Malin Attefall.

- But also because they took on the criticism that far too few women received the award, so more people have been invited to nominate, and more women have been invited to nominate, she says.

- Those who are invited are allowed to nominate three discoveries each, previously only one nomination was allowed.

"Looked at genes"

According to Malin Attefall, there are three researchers of the nominees who have a high chance of taking home the prize.

One of them is Mary Claire King, active at the University of Berkeley in the United States.

- She is the "grand lady" of science in some way.

She has been looking at genes for many years and her biggest contribution is that she has identified the brca1 gene, a gene that increases the risk of aggressive breast cancer, says Malin Attefall.
