• The 37th Victoires de la Musique will take place this Friday, February 11 and will be broadcast live on France 2 and France Inter from 9:10 p.m.

  • On stage, a guest does not say his name: Dolby Atmos.

  • This more immersive sound format which would like to impose itself has already been adopted by many artists including Stromae, honorary president of the evening, but also L'Impératrice and Aya Nakamura who are among the nominees.

While the 37th Victoires de la Musique celebrated this Friday are preparing to crown the talents of the song, a virtual guest will be invited to the party: the Dolby Atmos.

Known for home cinema systems, televisions, sound bars and even some smartphones, this sound spatialization technology is not new.

But she is now investing in the world of music at a run.

Stromae, honorary president of the ceremony, but also Aya Nakamura and the pop group The Empress adopted her.

The Empress was even the first to mix in Dolby Atmos in France, before the launch last June of the Apple Music platform made it possible to evangelize this audio format (also called Spatial Audio) to the public.

tools for mixers

So what exactly are we talking about when we talk about Dolby Atmos in music?

“It's a sound format that relies on creative tools that mixers will be able to use in the studio,” explains Anaïs Libolt,

home entertainment

manager for Dolby France, to “20 Minutes”.

If for artists, the way of recording does not change with the capture on different tracks of voices and instruments, it is only then that the magic of Dolby Atmos will operate on mixing consoles and computers.

And this is also possible with old recordings.

music in motion

“Musicians will be able to reproduce their music as they want to convey it.

They will have a larger space to position the sounds, each instrument will have more room to live and we can even induce movement”, deciphers Anaïs Libolt.

“Concretely, this allows you to have a real feeling of closeness and warmth when listening.

Beyond progress, it also allowed us to rediscover each piece of our album, ”adds the group L’Impératrice, questioned by “20 Minutes”.

Anyone who has ever listened to music in Dolby Atmos has seen how much more immersive the soundstage is than just recording in stereo.

“Listening, there is this aspect of emotional adhesion, an additional closeness with the artists.

For the latter, there is an enthusiasm, sometimes even a new way of creating by taking advantage of the format, ”defends the head of Dolby France.

A headset and a smartphone are enough

To taste it?

Nothing could be simpler with listening to headphones from a smartphone.

You still have to access songs in Dolby Atmos.

The Apple Music streaming platforms, but also Amazon Music and Tidal offer several hundred, the first two under the name “Spatial Audio”.

Spotify and Deezer are still missing.

If all iPhones are natively compatible with the Dolby Atmos format, more and more Android smartphones are also.

Tip: Amazon Music had the good idea of placing Dolby Atmos decoding directly in its application, thus making all smartphones suitable for broadcasting.

A traditional headset or classic True Wireless earphones are then sufficient.

In the pipeline: 780 French titles (Stromae, Jul, Aya Nakamura, Parcels, Vianney, Kyo, Johnny Hallyday, Air, L'Impératrice, Serge Gainsbourg, etc.).

And a rich international catalog (The Weekend, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, John Coltrane…).

The democratization of this format is growing.

Before the launch of Dolby Atmos on Apple Music in June 2021, only five French mixing recording studios had adopted it.

They are now 28 (including Studio Guillaume Tell, DES, The Mono Company, Miscendo, etc.).

The new star format from the American laboratories Dolby has a lot of ambition around the music industry.

For Anaïs Libolt, the "next step is to integrate Dolby Atmos directly into the creative process and no longer into the mixing, with sound elements planned from the start and perhaps also greater involvement of the artists for the staging of their music”.

"It's a format that offers a new way of working, with more freedom, which is necessarily interesting for us and our future productions," adds L'Impératrice.

Eventually, Dolby would like the Atmos to become the standard for all recordings.

* Broadcast live on France 2 and France Inter from 9:10 p.m.

** Respectively in the categories "Most Streamed Album by a Female Artist" and "Female Revelation of the Year".
