A man in his 60s who dumped his mother's body in a river because of the burden of funeral expenses has been sentenced to probation in prison.

The Gwangju District Court's 9th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Doo-hee Kim) announced today (2nd) that a person in his 60s, who was charged with corpse abandonment, was sentenced to 6 months in prison and 2 years of probation.

Person A is accused of throwing the body of her mother B (93) into a river at about 7:55 a.m. on July 3 at Godal Bridge in Gotal-myeon, Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do.

A's crime was discovered when a caregiver visited A's home.

The caregiver visited the house to bring breakfast to Mr. B, but found Mr. B dead in the bedroom and reported Mr. A, the fire department, and the police.

However, in the meantime, Mr. A abandoned Mr. B's body using his two-wheeled vehicle.

It was revealed that Mr. A committed this crime while worrying about funeral expenses after witnessing his deceased mother.

It was investigated that Mr. A suffered from a mental illness and had not taken any medications recently.

The court said, "The defendant's actions are against the universal ideology of a peaceful funeral for the dead, and the crime is not light. The sentence was decided based on comprehensive consideration of the fact that he appeared to be insane.”
