The result of "numerous studies"

Samsung is on the right track.

Its Galaxy S20 is one of the most remarkable high-end smartphones of the year, alongside the Huawei P40 or Oppo Find X II Pro.

While waiting for the rest, capitalize on a unifying concept… "The S20 Fan Edition is the result of many studies carried out on the most used functions of the S20, those which liked, those which displeased, and those which could be added ”, specifies one at Samsung France at the time of lifting the veil on this Fan Edition in the colors“ pop and funky ”(sic!).

Our preference will go towards the green model.

From the outset, the device throws it.

With its recognizable rear photo unit, its punch-shaped front sensor and its matte finish, the terminal is not a degraded version of the S20 that its name “Fan Edition” might suggest.

Some technological savings

But for flashy it is, this smartphone does not make less concessions.

It is in particular on the photo and the video that it plays the economy.

Exit the main rear sensor of the S20 which allowed video in 8K and photos up to 64 megapixels: Samsung replaces an 8 megapixel sensor (telephoto).

It is associated with two 12 megapixel sensors (wide angle and ultra angle f / 2.2).

Here, at the front, Samsung trades the 10 megapixel sensor against a 32 megapixel one.

Detailed selfies at the finish line… On the field, the team will defend itself with a 3x optical zoom and a hybrid zoom up to 30x.

Good point: Samsung keeps the photo / video mode called "Single Take" introduced with the S20.

The idea is to trigger a shot, to move the smartphone as if we were immortalizing a panorama.

Helped by its artificial intelligence, the device then stores a batch of images (up to 10 photos and 4 videos) in which wide-angle photos, portraits, photos with filters, clipping, time-lapse, etc.

A little side surprise cover for which it will be necessary to sort the wheat from the chaff, but which is not without reserve of good surprises, precisely, as we had observed.

For its part, the video will emerge in 4K, up to 60 images / second.

Depending on the version of the terminal chosen, the device will either be powered by the Exynos 990 in-house processor if it is 4G, or by the Qualkcom Snapdragon 865 processor if it is 5G.

A bigger screen but less defined

Another saving: the S20 Fan Edition abandons the When HD + screen with the slightly curved edges of the S20 for a 6.5 '' Dynamic Amoled Full HD + flat screen.

Small counterpart: with 6.5 '' / 16.51 cm, the Fan Edition's screen is larger than that of its predecessor (6.2 '' / 15.74 cm).

Its memory has also been inflated: up to 256 GB of storage (against up to 128 GB for the S20).

It remains expandable up to 1 TB with a microSD card.

There remains the question of the battery.

The S20 Fan Edition offers a little more than its big brother: 4500 mAh, against 4000 mAh for the S20.

Its larger screen may explain this additional capacity.

Unless Samsung wanted to correct the situation: the autonomy of the S20 had often been pinned down.

The Fan Edition is compatible with 25 W fast charging, but the supplied charger is only 15 W. The box of the S20, it integrated a 25 W charger.

Waiting for iPhone 12

On arrival, the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition could find its audience among demanding consumers who will not be satisfied with the Galaxy A71 (429 euros) placed just below in the range of the manufacturer, but will not want to go as far as afford an S20.

Still, in our opinion, the “price marker” is not important enough.

Offered from 659 euros to 829 euros **, this new Galaxy S20 would have deserved to be 100 euros cheaper to really stand out.

And not to encourage us to wait for the future iPhone 12 (which is long overdue) before making a possible choice.

* from 549 euros for the recovery of a Galaxy S9 +.

** 659 euros (4G / 128 GB / 6 GB);

759 euros (4G / 128 GB / 6 Gb);
