The health of the Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov continues to be monitored by the whole country.

Last week, the skater seemed to be on the mend.

After amputation of the foot and fingers (according to another version, both feet and hands), necrosis was stopped.

The doctors had to cope with only minor complications: the patient's kidneys began to work worse, which caused swelling.

Doctors were also worried about the large clogging of blood vessels.

“The bacterium that was detected upon admission already gave us signals that the course of the disease would be very difficult, that it would proceed with necrosis and necrotic damage to the subcutaneous tissue and muscles.

An hour later, it was clear that without more intensive methods of treatment it would not be possible to cope here.

What could be more intense?

This is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation of the lungs (ECMO).

The damage to the lung tissue was total - even mechanical ventilation did not allow us to maintain the oxygen content at a sufficient level, ”said the head physician of Kommunarka, where Kostomarov is being treated, Denis Protsenko.

However, the positive dynamics turned out to be temporary.

First, information appeared in the media about the return of Roman's breathing problems: due to fibrosis in the left lung, the skater was given a drain to remove fluid, and they did not turn him off from the ventilator.

And then, according to RIA Novosti, the Olympic champion suffered two strokes at once against the background of sepsis.

All night from February 20 to 21, Kostomarov spent in intensive care, where he was cleaned with plasmapheresis to prevent the formation of new blood clots.

In addition, the athlete was infected with part of the brain and a hematoma appeared.

Doctors believe that she passed from the ears and gave complications.

New formations were found in the frontal, right occipital and left parietal regions.

On Wednesday, February 22, there were reports in the media that Roman could go blind in one eye.

The figure skater has aphakia - there is no lens in the eyeball.

A few years ago, he had an operation to replace it.

Allegedly, now the lens had to be removed again due to severe frontal sinusitis.

Inflammation in the frontal sinuses puts pressure on the eyes, causing copious tearing and photophobia.

However, a Channel Five source called the news premature.

“Ophthalmologists observe that there is no strong eye pressure, plus edema gives cloudiness, so there is no need to make any predictions.

As soon as the edema begins to subside, then it will be necessary to look.

And not just a reaction to the light, but on the device, ”said the source of the TV channel.

The situation is further aggravated by a new diagnosis - “secondary meningitis”.

This means that there is a complication of another disease.

According to one version, Kostomarov, in addition to everything, picked up a nosocomial infection.

According to Sport-Express sources, the cause of new health problems could be Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which very quickly enters the body and destroys tissues.

However, there is no official confirmation of this hypothesis.

At the moment, there are no significant changes in Kostomarov's condition either.

He is connected to a ventilator and is in an artificial coma, from which the athlete's doctors do not want yet.

“The edema has moved to the head, they are still afraid to remove it from medical sleep, ophthalmologists regularly examine it, while it is all in edema, and it’s too early to talk about something,” the Izvestia interlocutor said.

Now, according to the source, everything is in the hands of Kostomarov himself.

“Doctors estimate the chances are 50/50: if the immune system cannot fight, then no medicine will help.

When they cleaned his blood, they expected that the immune system would give a positive trend, ”commented the interlocutor of Izvestia.

According to the doctor - therapist and immunologist Irina Yartseva, with such a set of diseases, the skater has very little chance of surviving, since the infection affects the body too quickly.

“The case of Kostomarov is unique in that the immune system failed in a healthy young athlete.

For this, serious reasons are needed: HIV, oncology, chemotherapy.

In such cases, we understand what is happening.

And then the athlete’s body (they are very hardy) says: that’s it, I can’t do it anymore.

This does not fit into the usual framework.

It didn't work out for him, unfortunately.

Everything doctors try to do is something incredible.

In such cases, there is very little chance of survival.

No one can give any forecasts, the current is too aggressive, ”the News.ru specialist quotes.

In connection with the deterioration of the athlete's condition, many began to complain that Kostomarov was not sent to Germany for treatment, where doctors were ready to accept him.

However, all doubts were dispelled by the professor of the Moscow Medical Academy Pavel Vorobyov.

“And what makes you think that his chances were higher there than here?

This is a stereotype that German doctors are better than ours, it has no basis.

I had the experience of my patients: they went there, and the situation only worsened.

So I would not rely on German medicine.

Second: in the state in which Kostomarov was, he simply would not have been taken.

He was immediately connected to a ventilator and ECMO, he could not breathe, the machines breathed for him, drove the blood.

They don’t fly in this state, ”Woman.ru quotes a specialist.
